Agree but remember its just a number. It is very much effected by the number of games played as well as results.
Another point worth mentioning is that one of the factors used for the draw in the World Cup is the the World Cup ranking and not the World Ranking (different things). So being a high rank team in world is not going to help us much in the WC.
The World Cup seeding for SA 2010 is likely to be similar to Germany 2006 so as a correction to my previous post, World Cup ranking and World Ranking would be used.
Germany 2006 The committee based its criteria for seeding on the 32 finalists’ performances at the FIFA World Cup finals in 2002 and 1998 (ratio 2:1) and the FIFA/Coca-Cola World Ranking in 2006, 2005 and 2004 (equal ratio).
Korea/Japan 2002 The seeded teams were determined upon the finalists’ performance in the past three FIFA World Cup finals (ratio 3:2:1), and their position over the past three years in the monthly FIFA/Coca-Cola Ranking (equal ratio).
This is our highest ranking ever. We are the 4th highest ranked team in the world outside Europe, behind the might of Brazil, Argentina and the not so mighty ;D USA who somehow managed to get into the Confed Cup final to boost their ranking.
Gif, There is a bit more to it. The highest ranked teams are not determined based on world ranking only. Past performances in the world cup has more of a say. There are a few other criteria like. - No more than 2 European teams in one group - No more than 1 team from any other zone in one group
