Well, the first big weekend of the finals series is upon us and it is pretty exciting stuff! Firstly, a big thank you to fat boy for his awards, great stuff!!
Ol’ Still had a few laughs at that, particularly the one about me being a Baulko groupie, funny stuff!! I do admit I have a soft spot for the OAP’s of Baulko, mainly because I like the fact that they battled away with what is the oldest team in the division and were within 2 minutes of a place in this weekend’s extravaganza, good stuff. I like seeing the old timers mixing it with the young ‘uns and sometimes getting the better of them, makes me a very proud old builder!!
I don’t consider myself a groupie however, I don’t have any affiliations with any side, just happened to catch more of their home games as Ted Horwood is the closest ground for me to get to of a Saturday and, as it was me who gave them the Jekyll & Hyde tag thought it only fair to try and give them a bit of airtime as nobody else seemed to talk about them other than to give the scores each week.
Now, onto the important biz of the weekend, the matches. Let’s look at Rissoles v Villains first. Even though the Villains won last week I still think the Rissoles are slight faves for this one but it will be a close ‘un. I don’t think you can read much into last week’s score as they were undermanned, tomorrow they will hopefully be back to full strength. They will be hurting at where they finished when by all rights they should have been a top 2 side but fell at the final few hurdles. The thought of crashing out in week 1 should be enough to spur them on. Don’t discount the Villains however, they will be right up for this and deserve their place in the semis. This one might go to extra time but I just lean towards the Rissoles.
The other match I think will be a fiery affair with no quarter given. Both sides don’t mind giving a bit of verbal and love to argue so I think this one needs a strong official to keep the emotions in check. You have Winsto who can still argue and dispute decisions during matches when they are 5 or 6 goals up and love to shout for handball every time the ball hits anything in the opposition’s penalty box and Pendo who are so similar in nature it will only be the colour of the jerseys that tell the difference. I expect at least 20 calls of “handball ref” by each side during this one! Again, I see this being a very close match but, for mine I think Winsto will just edge it.
Well, that’s it for me for today, I will try to get to one of the matches this weekend, probably the Rissoles v Villains match as it will be closer for me but would love to get to the 1 v 2 clash, it will be a ripper in my view!!!
Gents, play hard, fair and enjoy the feeling of playing finals matches, you lucky guys, it’s a great feeling…
Winsto 0 Pendo 4. What can I say, but hopefully we can pick ourselves up next week. It was one of those games where we had the early running - Pendo's keeper pulled of a season's worth of saves, (hopefully he is back at Old Trafford this week) and then a couple of goals turned the tide and Pendo got stronger as the game went on. Two second half penalties ensured Pendo went straight through to the GF.
Well played to Pendo. Hopefully we will get here in two weeks.

RSL 3 Kellyville 0
Good game played in great spirit. good to get a few players backi this week and it made the difference today. 2-0 at halftime and stayed that way until John smashed a left footer into the net with 15 seconds to go. Kellyville a great bunch of blokes to play against with very few free kicks and no whnging whatsoever. Suprise score in the other game 4-0 i thought it would of been closer.
Anyway Winsto next week for a spot in the grand final. look foward to it
Well, week 1 of the Finals is done and dusted and one team has bit the dust and two are left in a sudden death showdown for the right to play the mighty Pendo Blacks in the GF. First up let me offer my congrats to the Pendo Blacks for being the first team through to the big one. I must admit I did not see that score line coming and the Winsto boys must be a bit shell shocked by that result. Just a bad day at the office boys or were Pendo really that good?
I travelled the relatively short distance to Curtis Oval to watch the sudden death 3 v 4 match between the Rissoles and the Villains expecting a swash buckling contest, no quarter given or taken, a match for the right to keep playing. Ol’ Still was quite looking forward to what I thought would be an epic battle. Turned out to be a bit of a damp squib in the end with the Rissoles doing what they had to and were not pushed at all by a frankly, disappointing Villains outfit.
The Rissoles were on top right from the first whistle until the last. They could have been 2 up inside the first 5 minutes, one on one with the keeper with the striker, for mine, taking the shot too early and with not enough power but a tidy save by the Villains keeper to tip it around the post. Then, a few mins later they came even closer by hitting the bar. All looking good for the Rissoles at that point. I kept expecting the Villains to lift and put some pressure on RSL but it never came and the Rissoles duly scored midway through the first half with a nice shot from outside the box that went in just inside the upright then a second goal just before the break that seemed to knock the wind out of the Villains.
The second half was pretty much a non-event with RSL always in control. They played some nice football down the wings and attacked every ball that came their way but lacked the final touch sometimes that would have increased the score until with just about the last kick of the match they banged in the 3rd goal.
The Villains never seemed to get started, maybe the occasion got to them I don’t know but they didn’t look like scoring and never even came close to troubling the Rissoles keeper. I knew things were over for them when I noted one of their subs, with around 10 mins left go over to the esky, pull out a beer then go back to the bench to drink it! Never a good sign that you think you are still in it! I then saw another of the subs wandering over to get changed with around 5 to go, not sure if he was injured or not but, again, it didn’t seem to gel with the importance of the game.
I have played in plenty of finals matches over the years and not once did any team I played for ever think they were beaten with 10 to go and only 0-2 down but the Villains never seemed to lift the intensity and in fact, the whole match was played like a normal league match rather than a match to keep going in the finals. It was very weird to watch!
The game was played in a very good spirit, no arguing from anyone but I think that was probably because it wasn’t played with the intensity of a semi-final. The Rissoles were definitely the more intense of the two sides and they played like they were never going to lose the match, kept running the whole game and played it like winners.
I do have to say, and, it is just my opinion, but I think Baulko would have given the Rissoles a much more competitive game and may even have gotten away with a result, I certainly don’t think they would have gone down 0-3 based on what I saw but, we will never know as they didn’t make the semis!
Congrats to the Villains for making the top 4 but I really thought they would have put up a better fight than they did. They had a full bench compared to a very sparse looking Rissoles bench so no excuses there, they just never looked comfortable and seemed to be waiting for something to happen rather than trying to make it happen.
Will be a cracker next week between RSL and the Winsto boys who will be hurting after that match and will be very keen to put things right, I will definitely make my way to that one and I will give some views on that one later in the week.
I guess you misunderstood my post on the Rissoles v Kellyville match. Never said Baulko would have won it. Ol' Still's view was that I believed that, based on the match I watched I felt that Baulko would have pushed RSL harder than Kellyville did on the day and may possibly have won if they had brought their game from the previous match. Who knows though, Mr Hyde may have shown up and they would have lost big time!
And, do you not consider any side that were literally 2 minutes away from a guaranteed 4th spot finish and were awarded a disputed penalty against them to deny them their spot in the 4 unlucky? If that had happened to Kellyville or any other side in the comp I would have felt they should consider themselves very unlucky not to have gotten there.
Also, someone should point out to number9 that Baulko aren't playing Winsto, RSL are playing Winsto, Baulko didn't make the semis!! Ha ha
And, to finish, if it had been Baulko playing Winsto this weekend I would have tipped a Winsto win as I still think Winsto were the best team in the comp.
Last week they did crash a bit with that 0-4 defeat but I think they can bounce back this week as I didn't really see anything in the RSL side that would stop Winsto if they are in full flow. But, Winsto appear to be having a bit of the stutters the last couple of games that RSL had the last few weeks of the regular season so who knows.
I don't know Francesco Reserve but, if it is a small field like Baulko's postage stamp then Winsto might find themselves in a spot of bother. I will be going down there to watch as I think it will be a good match, you would have to consider RSL underdogs though. I know that when I was playing in the Finals our side always liked the underdog tag as it put all the pressure on the other team!
Just a quick one from Ol' Still this week as there is only one match on. Best of luck to both teams, it should be a great match but I just think that Winsto will shade it. Might struggle if it is played on a small pitch but I just think they will lift after last week and make sure they get another crack at Pendo as it will still be hurting them.
I am not ruling out the RSL boys but they will have to lift a lot from what I saw last week to get over the Winsto boys. Hopefully they will have a few more players back this week and that might make the difference.
I will be wandering down there to have a gander, from a neutral point of view. Don't mind who gets into the GF as long as they earn it on the day!
I suspect a few of the Pendo boys might turn up to see who they will be playing, that has been the trend in seasons gone by.
Enjoy the day one and all and commiserations to whoever bows out tomorrow, you have still had a great year...

Yeh thanks for that gibroni. Winsto probably deserve to be favourites. I am sure it will be a keenly fought contest and may the best team win. WHatever happens its been an enjoyable year all round and most teams really good to play against.

Francesco Crescent not the best ground but we played Kellyville there this year and it was in better condition than when I have played there before....fair sized downhill slope...just hope there is no rugby on the adjacent field otherwise finding parking is a problem....will head down and have a look but no tip may the best team win...
